The countdown before launch is at T minus four days and counting before Daily Kos vanishes for approximately a day to switch from the current software to the new DK4 software.
To find out about how DK4 works, you can check the DK4 FAQ on the dKosopedia, though it is very much a work in progress, with some significant sections yet to be written.
You can always go over and kick the tires at the DK4 beta site, see what there is to see, try clicking various links and menu items, and have a good time. Remember, thought, that this is a beta test: not everything is working as it will by the end of the week, and many improvements will be rolled out over the next few days.
This diary is here to let you ask questions, get advice, ask for an FAQ topic to be added asap, etc. And to give you pointers to some top-notch comments from the past 24 hours.
Friday's Top Comments was also a DK4 FAQ Forum; you may find answers in the diary or the comments. I also wish to acknowledge the founder and proprietor of the original FAQ Forum, dmsilev, who posted 77 such diaries on Wednesdays in 2008 and 2009, and did various stats and demographic diaries including what user IDs were given out when.
One feature of DK4 is that you no longer need demographic diaries to find out who joined when: user IDs and join dates are a part of all user profiles. So it's easy to remember exactly when you joined: just look at your profile.
A couple of reminders from Friday's diary:
- Your username, user id, account password, diaries, comments, recs, HRs, hotlist, blogroll, subscriptions, and profile information including bio and sig file will all be transferred over as they are when the current site shuts down on Friday, February 4.
- Whatever your sig is when the transition begins, that sig will be permanently entered on all your DK3 comments. We've been used to sigs that automatically change on all our old comments when we change our sigs. No more. The sig you have at the end of the day next Friday gets glued to your existing comments, and from then on, whatever your sig is when you post a comment is placed permanently on that comment. Starting Saturday, you can change your sig as often as you want, but it only affects the comments you write going forward.
Q: What questions were asked last time?
A: What a clever timesaver. These questions were asked in the diary:
- What is a Stream, anyway?
- It says I've got 1 New Message. Email on Daily Kos?
- How do I join a Group?
Q: I love my Hotlist page. Please tell me I can have it on DK4.
A: You'll have all the functionality of the Hotlist page. The three sections of the page, however are being split up (and I'm very glad they are!).
- The top section, [username's] Hotlist, can be found on My Page, using the Following submenu in its Hotlisted Diaries selection.
- The second section, Diary watchlist, is now part of your My Stream list, which you can find either under My Page, or from the Stream selection in your "Welcome Back" box. The individual users you subscribed to can be found in the Following submenu mentioned for the top section, this time under People. You can also see the "Following" list on the left side of your Profile page. (Click on your account name in the "Welcome Back" box, or click Profile after selecting My Page, to get to your profile page.)
- The third section, New replies, is due to be released this week. I won't know directions to its location until it appears.
Q: What do you know that isn't working, or isn't yet released.
A: Putting me on the spot? Okay. Let's see what's yet to make an appearance, or has a page that isn't yet functional.
- As noted in the previous question, New replies from the Hotlist page isn't yet released.
- Diary search isn't yet functional.
- Comment search isn't yet functional.
- Group search isn't yet released.
In addition, the following functions are not yet behaving as they ought:
- My Stream: if you're following groups and/or tags as well as people, the three are not integrated well. As a result, you'll see some diaries listed more than once, and each page of your stream, though in chronological order, will skip over some diaries, which appear on the next page (again in chronological order), etc.
- My Diaries, List View: in some cases, users other than yourself may pop up on your list. I have four diaries by Frankenoid, kos himself has some by thresholder.
- Messages: you can't delete messages. You can try, but they never stay deleted.
- Tables in diaries. You can publish them, but some of them overflow the diary margins and get cut off on the right side, including jotter's High Impact Diary tables. This will affect five or six years worth of tables, not to mention the new ones. Tables on DK4 also don't look as nice or as compact as DK3.
Okay, that's the requisite three questions. The rest are up to you.
While I'm at it, if there's some part of the DK4 FAQ that isn't clear, do let me know. Ask questions here! Areas that continue to need fleshing out include groups, messages, and searching. Searching is waiting for all of the Search software to become available for exploration, especially diaries and comments. This being Top Comments territory, we very much want a robust comment search. Among other things, top mojo depends on it. And I've seen some worrying signs of troubles ahead...

Many people didn't question the need for submitted comments, and sent in a number of excellent comment nominations to the Top Comments mailbox by the 9:30pm Eastern Time deadline. The address of our mailbox for top comments submissions remains:
TopComments AT gmail DOT com
(change " AT " to "@" and " DOT " to ".")
Anyone can send great comments to our address. Be sure to include the direct link to a comment—the URL—which is available from that comment's date/time; we need that to find your choice. Please always include your Daily Kos user name in the body of your message, so we can credit you properly. If you send a writeup with the link, we are able to include that, too, though we reserve the right to edit.
From BlackSheep1:
I nominate Andy's comment (by Horsefeathers) in the #sekritarmy diary for Sunday evening. [Editor's note: upthread, it was noted that pooties were beloved of the Egyptians, and suggested the link be explored; Andy agrees, and the thread continues from there.]
From belinda ridgewood:
In Crashing Vor's diary Dammit, Cookie, I Want My 21st Century!, boran2 expressed a lingering hope, and Crashing Vor's response made me laugh bitterly yet loudly.
From StepLeftStepForward and fou (using SLSF's writeup):
Geekesque once again offers clarity and advice to those who suffer from "white guilt" in RadioGirl's wonderful diary Reflections of a White, Female Race Traitor: Heavy Heart Edition. I suspect his hypothesis is correct, and his advice definitely is.
From sardonyx (your highly questionable Monday diarist):
In Alec82's diary The Globalization of Homohate: Time to Ask Some Hard Questions, rserven notes something strange.
A couple of additional comments from RadioGirl's diary caught my eye: Nanette K's on being a white people code talker, and KroneckerD's on realizing painful truths.
Please add your own comment finds below!
