We all have seen the rise of deaths occurring at the hands of the police. All to often the excuse used by the police is that they feared for their life. These statements are hard to refute especially without video evidence. There is no national database to even compare the numbers of policemen who are killed in the line of duty versus those they kill. I did find a website that is trying to find these statistics but with no official count they are having to cross reference news reports, obituaries and posts from social media. I don't know exactly how accurate this method is, but at least someone is trying. With so many people who have cellphones with videos that are bringing this to the forefront of the public conscience, an official database would put this in context.
The numbers of people who are killed from actions by the police either before or after arrest is at an alarming number of 1098 in 2014. Police who died as a result of their duty of enforcement is 73. That's 14.64 civilian to each police officer. This DOES NOT include excessive force, police brutality or police over reach. I have my sources listed and checked 3 times.

There was 1098 people killed by police in 2014. So far from January 1, 2015 to January 10, 2015 there has been 29 killed so far. These may be short of the actual number as these were compiled by crowdsourcing and verified by public record.
