Top Comments: Steve Soto on Daily Kos, part 2

Fri May 09, 2008 at 07:00:08 PM PDT

On January 3, 2003, three months (and a few days) after Steve Soto first commented on Daily Kos, Markos made an announcement:

Introducing the first dKos guest contributors

Greetings everyone. Work and the Political State Report have been keeping me busy. So busy, in fact, that I have lined up two guest contributors to pick up my slack over the next two weeks.

Long time readers will recognize the guest contributors immediately: Billmon and Steve Soto, both of them comment board favorites. The two of them will essentially take over this site starting tomorrow (and may start posting as soon as today). I'll still post occassionally, but in effect this will be their site for the two-week period.

Try to be nice.

Update: Posts written by either Billmon of Steve will be signed by their respective authors. If you see a post with no signature, it's still me.

Posted January 03, 2003 09:28 AM

Yes, it should have been "Billmon or Steve" in the update, but typos happen. So do jumps. One right about...now!

As 2003 started, Daily Kos was a bit over seven months old, and growing swiftly. Any extended break in posting could break the momentum of the site—hence billmon and Steve Soto. Both had been active commenters; you can read Steve's comments by using the links in yesterday's Top Comments: Steve Soto on Daily Kos, part 1 diary. (Billmon's are here.)  Steve Soto's guest posts started the day after kos's announcement, and were signed "Steve Soto", just as he signed his comments, but he shortened his post signature to "Soto" on January 9 and reverted only once thereafter, though his comment signature retained his full name.

Steve wrote a total of 59 front-page posts in his seven weeks as a guest blogger: over half in the initial period he shared with Billmon (33), two singleton guest shots in the next week, and three weekends as a solo guest: January 25–26, a last-minute February 7–9 weekend when Markos was ill, and finally a Wednesday through Friday stint later that month, the 19th through 21st. By late Sunday the 23rd, Steve's own blog had opened up shop, and his career on the Daily Kos front page was over. When Markos needed a substitute blogger the next Friday, he turned to Billmon, whose own guest blogging career had only another five weeks to run before he, too, opened his own blog.

Markos returned home and resumed blogging that day, and Steve opened The Left Coaster for business shortly before midnight two days later, on February 23, 2003. Daily Kos found out about it next day courtesy of a Markos post: Steve Soto has a new blog. The Left Coaster is still active; Steve's currently on sabbatical from the site, with a planned return to active blogging of some kind in June 2008.

As always, corrections and pointers to missing information are most welcome. The contents of this diary and the one from yesterday will find its way into the dKosopedia in the near future; a Steve Soto page there has already been created. The Steve Gilliard and Billmon information is already there, and has been expanded since its original Top Comments publication, though there's still much more to be added.

From Neon Vincent:

In Jerome a Paris's diary Hey cool - the economic crisis is already over! eightlivesleft cuts to the core of the transparent folly of the Wall Street pundits who say the worst of the financial crisis is over in we're not at the bottom.

Also in the same diary, superscalar creates an antigravity machine involving cats and buttered toast in Have you heard the old physicists joke?

Elise writes:

Mindtrain has a great comment on race and racism in teacherken's diary, Hillary is arrogant, not racist—needless to say, I disagree with the title at this point.

From your diarist sardonyx:

In DarkSyde's Science Policy Change or Cheap McCain Makeover? front-page post, kevin3231 gives us thoughts from a Cancer Biology graduate student on "how bad things are getting in the scientific community."

LEP has a thought on McCain's candidacy from the vantage point of 71+ years.

When phrogge prince writes "Cold day in hell...", blueocean replies with some authoritative evidence that the day is upon us.
